I began my life on earth near Quitaque, Texas. My parents were W.R. "Bill" Hardin and Achsah Caroline Goodwin Hardin. This occurred on September 26, 1929. Shortly after my birth, this nation was swept into the era referred to as "The Great Depression". When I was still a baby, my parents and my older brother, Buck, moved to Silverton, Texas where I grew up.
My dad was a farmer and during the depression years our family had access to produce from our farm crops. After our arrival in Silverton, my younger brothers, twins, Jim, and Gene were born. All of us children helped out on the farm; we learned to work. All four of us attended the school system at Silverton where we all graduated.
My generation saw the tragic beginning of World War II. We were witnesses to the way this nation united in its effort to defeat our enemies.
In May 1946, I began attending Texas Tech University at Lubbock, Texas. Many of the students were G.I.'s returning from the service. As coed students, we rode buses on dates to the movie theaters or wherever we chose to go. I graduated in May 1950. I became employed with an oil company called George P. Livermore and Great Western. During my college days I had taken a computer class, and this enabled me to work in the computer department. The machines were quite different then from our table tops and lap tops; we had to prepare cards with holes punched in them to be read on the computer. The computer itself was about the size of an office desk.
I left this employment when I began my married life, April 12, 1952, to Arlas Cavett. We resided in Ft. Worth where our first son, Rodney was born. One of our first purchases was a black and white television. At that time very few homes had a television. In 1954 Arlas was transferred to Andrews.
Our sons, Barry and Brett, were both born in Andrews. As parents we saw our children go through babyhood, school years, graduation, college, and marriages and then they provided us with grandchildren. Rearing our children was the most precious time in our married life.
One of the most important events in my life happened in 1955 when I began my journey with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Andrews.
I was a charter member of the Permian Basin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I also was a member of The Presidents of Texas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Those preceding me in death was my husband, Arlas O. Cavett, December 7, 1998. Also, my parents and brothers, Jim Hardin and Buck Hardin.
My survivors are: sons, Rodney Cavett and wife, Debra of Nemo, Texas; Barry Cavett and wife, Cindy of Andrews; and Brett Cavett and wife, Linda of Tyler, Texas. Grandchildren and spouses: Tabitha and Jase Mayton of Buena Vista, Colorado; Andrew and Jamie Cavett of Lipan, Texas; Ruth and Kyle Zschiesche of Hamilton, Texas; Lee Ann and Eric Smith of Corpus Christi; Shane Cavett of Andrews; Ethan Cavett and fiancée Nikki Albertson, Midland, Texas; and Hartley and Jacob Bernardino of Tyler, Texas. One brother, Gene Hardin and wife, Gayle of Dallas. Great-grandchildren: Charis, Eben and Michaiah Mayton; Wylie, Winnie Jane, Caroline, and Sidney Cavett; Grace Zschiesche. In lieu of flowers please contribute to Andrews County Library (Joyce had read over 800 books from the library) 109 NW 1st Andrews, TX 79714, or Andrews Senior Center, Meals On Wheels, 310 W Broadway, Andrews, TX 79714.
